1994 Ford Explorer Repair Manual
Service Manuals I just wanted to share my experience regarding service manuals. I've always worked on my own car when I was able. I like to do simple stuff like changing oil, brake pads, coolant, transmission fluid, air filters, spark plugs, etc. In the past I've always owned Honda and always had their printed manual.
But now I am in search of Ford manuals. So first I've determined there doesn't seem to be anything printed.it's all electronic.
I subscribed for a month to Motorcraft Service for $19.95. They don't have 2013 on there at all.so I had to settle for 2012. For 2012, they have all TSBs listed plus the service manual. The service manual can only be viewed one page at a time, which pretty much prevents you from downloading it to reference later. You can print one page at a time.but it would take forever to print out the whole thing (and I don't know how many pages it is).

I printed a few pages to PDF (using CutePDF) but it would take me a long, long time to save the whole thing. Also, it only works in Internet Explorer because its ActiveX so forget about Firefox, Chrome, etc. They also have wiring diagrams but I could not look at them because you have to use SVG viewer from Windows XP!
I'm on Windows 7 so I didn't bother trying to go through that trouble. I am still trying to find obvious stuff in their manual like how to change the oil, etc. There are other options on the site too but I could not make any of them work. The 2nd option seems to be Helm. They have an online subscription which I suspect is similar to Motorcraft. I know Helm hates you to download anything (I had my Honda account locked when I tried to download too much in a day). So I am looking mostly at their paper or offline products.
Like Motorcraft, they don't have 2013 available. They have a wiring diagram on paper (FCS1220612) for $79.

They have Service Information CD (FCS1277312) for $170. This is the option I might eventually go, but $170 is a bit steep for me right now. The 3rd option seems to be to get a discarded Ford technician DVD (that the dealers use) off of ebay. I've read these work but you have to set your computer clock date back since they have expiration dates. They kindof sounds like a pain. Right now there aren't any available on ebay anyways. I'd be interested to hear anyone's ideas or opinions.
